In the hidden places of your heart, do you ever find yourself longing for more?
Many of us have struggled with a yearning for something we do not have, and yet we are often misinterpreting what we actually long for. Some of us long for a spouse or a new job, while others may long for a completely different life. It’s a wonder why we are always wanting more than what we currently have, and yet I am not surprised at why we have been given an empty void in our hearts that only Christ Himself can fill.
What profit has the worker from that in which he labors? I have seen the God-given task with which the sons of men are to be occupied. He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.
According to this passage of scripture, we’ve each been given a “God-given task” otherwise known as an “assignment.” As long as we live on this earth, we are to carry out this assignment in love. Some days, it may be difficult to understand why God has given us an assignment that we don’t enjoy, however, I truly believe that the frustrations that come with having an uneasy assignment are all part of God’s plan: longing for intimacy with Him.
The problem we often run into as we journey through this life is that we often think that this life is all there is. We search for anything that will temporarily satisfy the true longings of our hearts, meanwhile, we forget that God has given us a heart that longs for something that lasts forever (Ecc. 3:11)––eternal life with Him.
This may sound morbid, but I’ve attended a number of funerals in my lifetime and have truly grasped the true meaning of life here on earth. It’s not about the temporal things, in fact, that’s all part of the enemy’s plot to destroy us. He wants us to believe that this life is the only life that exists, so we may as well do and say as we please. However, according to God’s Word, we’ve each been given a heart that longs for eternity(––so each of us knows that there is more than this life to come.
With years of experiencing a longing for more, I’ve definitely filled the empty spaces in my heart with things that are only temporary. But, when I accepted Christ into my heart and made Him my Lord and Saviour, He changed and exchanged the temporary “quick-fixes” for a desire to draw close to Him. I can now live my life in a way that pleases Him but also gives me true satisfying joy: Intimacy with Christ.
