If there is anything I have learned while journeying through this life with the Lord, it is becoming more obedient to Him. Biblical obedience is the key to finding joy and blessing, however, it’s not something we do in the hopes of receiving something from God. Obedience is a privilege because it allows us to honor the Lord, but it’s not something we do merely to receive some kind of reward.
If you think about it, obedience to the Lord is an act of worship because we are giving up our own desires in order to please God. Whenever we do something that we know we shouldn’t be doing, we are essentially giving glory to ourselves and the rest of the world.
This is something I have been wrestling with, and I have been praying about. I mean, I know what is right and what is wrong. For the most part, I have been able to choose to do the right thing with the help of the Holy Spirit guiding me. However, there are days where I neglect prayer first thing in the morning or don’t make time to read the Word, and as a result, I have deceived myself by doing something that is “almost right” but truly isn’t right.
This is why it is so important to understand the basic truths that are found in the bible. When we read His Word, we find out how to live out our lives in accordance with His will. Rather than making up our own standards or ideas, we are told how to walk, talk, and act with others throughout each scripture passage. There is a verse found in every situation in life, sometimes directly and other times indirectly. No matter what it is we are struggling with, we can find hope in Jesus and the Word He gives us.
The other night, I was struggling with feeling as though I was disobeying God through my actions. I thought I was spending too much time scrolling through social media and posting pictures of myself. It felt as though I had done something wrong, even though it’s something people do all the time. Maybe this was God’s way of getting my attention? Perhaps I was spending too much time being connected with the world, rather than being in close connection with the Lord.
Rather than beating myself up for it, I turned my heart over to God and repented of my actions. I told Him how much I loved Him, and how much I desire to live my life for Him. In the midst of feeling like I’ve disappointed the Lord, I have asked Him for wisdom, discernment, and forgiveness. I also let a close friend of mine know how I was feeling, and they suggested we become accountability partners in our walk with the Lord. This was an answered prayer for me because I have always desired an accountability partner to make sure I am living my life as best as possible for the God who created me, saved me, and blesses me each day.
My prayer for you is to continue to grow in your faith, by placing your trust in Jesus to guide you into His perfect will. I know there are days where I need to do just this, but I am also learning to lean on His promise of “guiding me into His Truth.”
Ask yourself this question: Do I live to please others (or myself) or for the Lord?
Then ask God to reveal to you whether or not you are living for Him or for others. When I asked God to show me if I was doing this, He showed me that there are times where I do seek to please people instead of Him. I asked the Lord to forgive me and help to continue serving Him the best that I possibly can with the help of the Holy Spirit.
For do I now persuade men or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.
Heavenly Father, I pray that you would help those who need to hear from You. I pray that you would guide them into Your truth, by giving the wisdom, the knowledge, and the understanding that they need to accomplish Your will. I pray that You would give them a renewed mind, and transform their hearts in order to produce obedient actions to follow. Father, help them to see that your Word is the only source we can find our answers from when we are unsure, help us to receive the proper direction and confirmation that we are in fact doing what You’ve called us to do. Lord, without Your Holy Spirit guiding us, we would be so lost. Thank You for sending us a Word of Truth and Hope. Give us a refreshing, new perspective on how to live righteously. You, Lord, make us righteous and we thank You for cleansing us and making us into new creations. I ask this all within Your name, Amen.
