The Value of a Friend

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Proverbs 17:17
God loves it when we count our blessings, and today and everyday I am grateful for the gift of friendship. I have met so many wonderful people in the last two years of college, all of which have been incredibly uplifting and helpful to me as I journeyed through the program, but there is one friend in particular that has been constantly giving their encouragement, and sharing their faith with everyone she meets. The Godly-woman I am speaking about is named Shauna. A faithful friend, a loving spirit, and a true worshiper of Jesus Christ.
My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
You are my friends if you do what I command.
I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

John 15:12-15

When I first met Shauna, she was always very welcoming and kind towards me and others. She never chose “favourites”, but treated everyone with the same ounce of respect and dignity. Her heart is warm, her eyes are radiant. Her smile is wonderful and her laugh is contagious. I am so grateful to know you Shauna.

For the first few months of knowing Shauna, her relationship status was “single”, yet somehow she often portrayed herself in a deep, intimate relationship with the Lord. Her walk with God was evident by the way that she spoke. She never cursed or used the Lord’s name in vain, but always held a high respect the Word and what it teaches. Her kindness, joy, peace, faithfulness, and other fruits of the Spirit are what gave me the idea that she very well could be a Christian.

And sure enough, as I started getting to know Shauna more I realized where she stood in terms of her beliefs and values, and she told me that she has been a Christian for the majority of her life. She made the commitment to follow Christ from a young age, and since then she has continued in her walk and has grown so much since she gave her heart to the Lord. What I love most about Shauna is that she is not ashamed of asking for prayer, because she knows how powerful of a tool prayer can be. She humbly asks those around her to pray for her own needs, which brings me to the next point about Shauna…

Her relationship with Tom.

For many years, Shauna was praying for a Godly-man to walk into her life. When she prayed, she asked God these key things about the man she would marry someday…

His number one love is God
He will be a respectful husband
He will be one that will help me grow in the Lord
He will be one that shares the same values as me
She said to me, “Sara, Tom was praying for his future wife about the same time I started praying for my husband”
This give me goosebumps!
How wonderful is it to know that God can orchestrate things to happen for us at the right place, and at the right time. When we choose to put our trust in Him, He gives us the desires of our hearts.
Look at these two love birds… ❤
One key thing I would like to highlight about Shauna is she loooooves french vanilla’s from Tim Horton’s. If you’re ever doing a Timmie’s run and are unsure of what to get Shauna, make it a small french Vanilla…or any size will do. She will thank you and appreciate you more than words can ever explain!
If I were to describe Shauna in three words, I would say she is faithful, loving, and selfless.

I say faithful, because she is the type of person who will follow through will something, no matter how tired or unwell she might feel. She’s someone that can get a 1-hour sleep, and still treat you with respect and give you her full attention. She’s the type of student who would stay up all hours of the night to finish a project because of her committed attitude.

Shauna sitting in her regular spot doing homework of some kind. She would spend her morning, in between classes, and evenings at the school because she is a diligent, hard-working woman.

She’s the type of friend who encourages, builds-up, and strengthens the people around her because of the love she has for Jesus-Who gives her the ability and courage to do so. Shauna, you are a dear sister to have in Christ. I’ve learned so much from you and have grown in the Lord because of your faithfulness as a friend.

I say loving, because she will literally text someone at 4 in the morning just to send a word of encouragement. I’ll never forget the time Shauna texted me at 4:30 a.m. just to tell me that she was thinking of me, praying for me, and then had several bible verses come to mind and decided to share them with me.

These were the verses she shared:

I chose the word selfless, because she is always giving, sharing, and making herself available to others. Before every test, Shauna leans over with her pencil sharpener. She’s always offering something, whether it be a listening ear or a friendly smile, she’s selfless in so many ways.

Thank you Shauna for your endless amount of support and encouragement in my walk with the Lord. Thank you for being consistent in your ability to love other people. Thank you for always reading & sharing my blog with others. You never know who is out there reading that is need of some daily encouragement, which is why I am so privileged to use this blog as a way to share the good news.
